Solar Oven Craft
I think most of us remember using solar ovens in grade school. Except we used them to cook food. This is a unique and fun way to use a solar oven. And the best part is, younger kids and older kids can both use it.
Explore temperature and how the sun heats things up and melts crayons. Explore colors and make neat designs on your rocks. This budget-friendly craft is simple and easy to do. So, without further ado, let’s decorate rocks!

How To Do This Solar Oven Craft
Step 1
Cut 3 sides of the top of your shoe box. You’re going to make a flap.
Step 2
Line the entire inside of your shoe box with aluminum foil, making sure the shiny side is face out. You can use glue or tape to help it stay in place.
Craft note:
Don’t line the flap, we will do that separately.
Step 3
Line the inside flap with aluminum foil. You can use glue or tape to help it stay in place.
Step 4
Place a couple rocks inside the oven.
Step 5
Break or shave pieces of crayon and place them on top.
Step 6
Close the solar oven and allow the rocks to sit inside for a couple hours. Make sure the box is sitting in the sunlight.
Step 7
Carefully open the box and look at your pretty rocks. Do not pick them up until they have time to cool off or using something like tongs and gloves.
How To Modify This Solar Oven Craft
If you live in an area that isn’t particularly warm yet or maybe the sun is in and out of the clouds you can always add a black piece of paper at the bottom of your solar oven to help keep more heat in the box.
Our Experience With This Solar Oven Craft
Like I said before, I remembered using solar ovens in elementary school to cook frozen pizza. And I thought it was a perfect time to use it. Especially since my kids have been saying its too hot to be outside, ignoring my speech of how in about a month it’s gonna be about 20 degrees higher and miserable.
But this craft was the perfect way to get them outside and excited to be outside. We made so many colorful and pretty rocks. It was a lot fun. And now we have cute decorations that are making my kids window sills look happy and colorful.
It’s an easy craft that both my younger kids and older kids could do. So, it was nice having everyone involved. I hope your kids have as much fun as mine did with solar oven craft.
