There’s just something magical about stringing up a line of little hearts, isn’t there? Whether you’re getting ready for Diwali, Valentine’s Day, or just want to sprinkle some handmade love around your home, this crochet heart garland is the perfect stash-buster.
I first stumbled into this design while playing around with chain-and-scallop patterns, and honestly, it was one of those “aha!” moments where the hearts practically made themselves. It’s a fun, meditative project you can whip up in an afternoon while sipping chai. And the best part? You can make it in any colors to match the season — think hot pink and purple for Diwali, classic red for Valentine’s, or even earthy tones for everyday décor.
This is an easy project for beginners since it only uses chains, slip stitches, double crochet, and the occasional triple crochet. Don’t be scared of the triple — if you can double crochet, you’ll pick it up in no time.
Materials
- Medium weight yarn (#4) or bulky (#5) – any fiber works, but wool holds its shape beautifully
- Crochet hook: 8 mm for #4 yarn, 10 mm for #5 yarn
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- Optional: Spray starch + tea towel for pressing
Sizing Notes:
- With #4 yarn, each heart is about 2.25–2.75″ wide (roughly 1 g of yarn). A 6 ft. garland uses about 29 hearts.
- With #5 yarn, each heart is closer to 3″ wide (about 3 g each). A 6 ft. garland uses about 25 hearts.
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- dc = double crochet
- tc = triple crochet
Pattern
Foundation:
Decide how long you want your garland to be. Each heart requires 5 chains, plus 2 extra at the end.
(Example: For 20 hearts, chain 102. For a 6-foot garland with #4 yarn, chain 147.)
Heart Bottoms:
- Sl st in the 2nd ch from hook.
- Skip 1 ch, work: 3 dc, 1 tc, 3 dc all in the next ch.
- Skip 1 ch, sl st in the next.
- Repeat steps 2–3 across the chain.
Heart Tops:
Turn your work.
- Ch 1, sl st into the next space.
- 3 dc into next space, sl st into center space (the “valley” of the heart), 3 dc into next space, sl st into the next.
- Repeat from * to * for each heart.
Finish off after the last heart, weave in ends.
Press lightly with a pressing cloth and a bit of spray starch to help the hearts keep their shape. This step makes a big difference, especially if you plan to hang your garland along a doorway or mantle.
Tips:
- Try making a rainbow of hearts and joining them for a festive Diwali bunting.
- Add tassels or beads between hearts for extra flair.
- Make mini-hearts with lighter yarn and smaller hooks for gift toppers or tree ornaments.
